Alan Dempsey
Alan is founding director of NEX, and in 2008 was selected by the British Council as one of the six most significant Design Entrepreneurs in the UK.
He is a chartered architect in the UK and has previously worked with Future Systems, OCEAN and Homa Farjadi. His experience in leading the design and construction of projects covers multiple sectors including infrastructure, commercial offices, retail, residential, cultural and public buildings.
Alan studied at the Dublin Institute of Technology, Universidad de los Andes, Bogota and the Design Research Lab at the Architectural Association in London, where he graduated with a thesis distinction in 2002. He was a Unit Tutor at the AA until 2005, and is currently a Director of the FAB Research Cluster and the Independent’s Group at the AA, which facilitate research into the use of computational design and fabrication to enable innovative forms of design practice. In this academic work he has shown a commitment to research and inquiry into how emerging technologies can redefine the future of our discipline and strengthen the role of the architect in future practice.
Alan’s work has been widely published in the in the US, Europe and Asia, and was selected to represent the UK at the Beijing Architecture Biennale in 2008. He is the editor of two forthcoming books to be published by the AA press in 2010: Nine problems in the form of a pavilion, which documents his first completed project; and Designing Fabrication which presents the work of the first two years of the AA|FAB Awards. He has been invited to speak about his work internationally, most notably at the ETH in Zurich, Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing and the NAI in Rotterdam. His completed work as received a number of awards including a LEAF award for Spencer Dock Bridge, and a D&AD pencil for the [C]space DRL10 Pavilion.

Paul Loh
Paul is a UK chartered architect with over nine years of practice experience. Prior to joining NEX, he worked with MacCormac Jamieson Prichard Architects, Dr. Kenneth Yeang, Zaha Hadid Architects, and Fletcher Priest Architects. His design experience ranges from large scale master planning for Coventry City Council through to a £35 million new student residence project for St John’s College in Oxford.
Educated in Australia (University of Melbourne) and London, Paul gained his Diploma in Architecture at the University of East London with Distinction in Design before joining the Architecture Association, Design Research Laboratory in 2000; graduating with distinction in Design thesis. His continued academic research focuses on complex geometry and its spatial and ergonomic effects in built forms. Through his leadership of a research unit at the University of East London, where he was the unit master since 2006, he continues to push the boundaries of computational geometry and its fabrication potential, and has conducted design workshops in Europe and Asia.
Paul has experience in collaborative work with artists and other designers. He has successfully managed projects that require a high degree of technical design ability. His interest lies in the materialisation of projects with innovative technical solutions that reinforce the clarity of a design concept to ensure the delivery of a client’s vision and aspiration.

Wenwen Wang
Educated in Shanghai and London, Wenwen gained her Diploma in with honours in Landscape Architecture at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning in Tongji University. She continued her studies at the Architectural Association and graduated with distinction with a Masters degree in Landscape Urbanism in 2009.
Prior to joining NEX, Wenwen ‘s professional experience with Tongji Architecture and Urban Planning Institute includes the design of a public transportation system for Lishui town in Pearl River Delta, China; an urban water front renewal project in Alicante, Spain; and the Global City Square for the World EXPO 2010 in Shanghai.
Wenwen‘s research experience has been in the fields of territorial analysis, and developing strategies for relating environmental performance to regional policy + regulation. Her interests lie in the interaction between landscape territories and infrastructure as a means of developing new urban prototypes.
