Moiré
A proposal with visual artist Tomislav Topić for a series of suspended mesh installations at Cardinal Place, Victoria, marking the estate's entrances and guiding visitors through its levels to the park above.
Cardinal Place sits at the heart of Victoria, its shops, offices and roof park arranged across levels that visitors do not always find. In an invited competition curated by the Architecture Foundation, Nex proposed a collaboration with the visual artist Tomislav Topić, whose first UK work would be a series of collaboratively designed installations to make the estate's entrances legible from a distance and its levels navigable from below.
Each installation consists of layered coloured mesh, suspended within the estate's existing structure. The overlapping patterns would change in colour and apparent density in a moiré effect, as the viewer moves beneath them. From a distance the installations mark the gateways. From beneath, they draw visitors onward, running from the lower ground to the upper park level and signalling the presence of the park to the street.
The colour palette is drawn from the estate's stakeholder consultations and its established identity, so the installations belong to Cardinal Place and its surroundings.
