Public Realm Architects

Nex designs buildings and the places around them. We connect our projects to a wider context, extending into the city or drawing the surroundings in.

Buildings and the City

We work for commercial, cultural and educational clients that think about a building in its setting and take a long-term view of the contribution it makes. For our clients, a new building is a chance to open public space and enliven an estate, making places that are well used and well cared for, while adding to a building's value.

Our appointments range from estate masterplanning and feasibility studies through to full design and delivery. We lead these projects from the first conversation to completion, often working within settings that stay open and busy while we build.

Royal Wharf Pier extends 130 metres into the Thames, combining a working Thames Clippers terminal with a new public promenade and viewing platform. It is the first public pier of its kind in London, open to visitors and the local community as well as commuters. In Chelsea, our restaurant at Duke of York Square for Cadogan lifts a public roof garden above the square, reached by its own stair and freely accessible. At Regent's Place, Bower places three demountable oak pavilions along a route through the estate, inviting people in, while offering somewhere to sit, play and perform. It is our third project on the estate with British Land, after Hedgerow, a planted reception wall, and Coppice, a circular economy fit-out inside the tower.

We lead these projects from the first conversation to completion, often working within settings that stay open and busy while we build.

Our completed projects have received Civic Trust Awards for their contribution to public benefit. Building Design named Nex UK Public Realm Architect of the Year in 2020, recognition of buildings that open public space within the estates in which they stand.
